Things I've been noticing about fashion lately

Lately, I’ve been paying more attention to the smaller and quieter shifts in fashion. Not just the trends, but the in-between moments, such as the way people are actually getting dressed day-to-day.

I've been noticing how often the same outfits appear, just slightly redone every time. This includes identical silhouettes, similar colour palettes, and the same “effortless” combinations (e.g., oversized shirts, baggy jeans, trainers, gold, dainty jewellery). It’s definitely not a bad thing, but it does make everything start to blur together a little bit.

At the same time, I’ve noticed more people repeating outfits, styling things in practical ways and also leaning into comfort without over-explaining it. There’s something quite refreshing about that - less performative, more real, and this is exactly what The Everyday Observer is about, making it crucial to highlight.

I’ve also been thinking about how much of fashion now exists online first instead of in person. Outfits are often initially styled for how they’ll look in a photo, or how they fit into a certain aesthetic, rather than how they feel to wear in real life. And yet, there’s also a growing push against that, such as when people show more unfiltered versions of their style, even if it’s still subtle. This can be really effective in helping people come to terms with the fact that online isn't the same as real life,

ensuring we stop comparing ourselves to online personas of strangers.

It feels like fashion is sitting somewhere in between individuality and influence right now. People want to express themselves, but they’re also constantly surrounded by the same references, the same inspiration, the same looks.

These are just small things, but they're things that I have picked up on.

This is the start of a new series I'm going to keep up with regularly. This is going to be a space to keep noticing, questioning and documenting how fashion is actually showing up in everyday life.
